Malware is a catchall term for any kind of unwanted computer program that can cause data loss, change system settings and create other annoyances. Viruses, worms and trojans are different types of malware. Anti-virus programs are software applications designed to detect and remove malware from a computer. Avira AntiVir is a free anti-virus program that contains a feature called AntiVir Guard, which helps scan files for malware threats as you use your computer.

Instructions

1. Double-click on the Avira AntiVir icon in the system tray. The icon looks like a white umbrella on a red background. The Avira program window will open.
   
2. Click "Activate" on the AntiVir Guard line. The status will change from "Deactivated" to "Activated." When AntiVir Guard is active, the umbrella in the AntiVir system tray icon will be open instead of closed.
   
3. Right-click on the Avira AntiVir icon in the system tray and then click "AntiVir Guard enable" if there is not a check mark next to "AntiVir Guard enable." This is an alternative way to enable AntiVir Guard.
